Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Highlanders by replicating a 2000 year old Highlands cup of your own. With expert tuition from Wooden Tom, you will be guided to safely use hand tools such as a knife and axe to create your own Highlands kuksa cup to take home.
This course is designed to focus your skills with the carving knife to get great finish on your cup. In this course you will hone your knife skills for arguably the most important process to get a good looking cup. At the end of the day you will also be able to paint your cup so you can go home and start using it a few days after the paint has dried.
This is one of the more technical and physical courses so to get the most out of it, it is recommended you have done some woodwork before or at least used to working with your hands in other activities. Either that or you just have bags of enthusiasm! This is a great course to learn many of the grounding skills in one day which are transferable on to other carving projects.
About Wooden Tom
As a way of avoiding the streets of Northern England growing up I found myself at every opportunity escaping the urban jungle and heading for the woods. I would make camps and whittle sticks with borrowed tools from my carpenter grandfather. This all undoubtedly was the start of my addiction! Ever since, I sought to expand my knowledge by learning from experts in the field but mainly from lots and lots of mistakes! In 2010 a job brought me to the Scottish Highlands working with the forestry commission where i fell in love with the Cairngorms. One of the defining features in this area are the clean white stems of the Birch trees, and it is with these trees i have my closest connection with carving. I use the wood for making various kitchen utensils although my main passion is making drinking vessels.
