Traditional Scottish Arm Creel with Rachel

  • Green Aspirations Scotland CIC Dykehead, Scotland, FK8 3JY United Kingdom (map)

This two-day workshop is suitable for participants with some previous experience of working with willow.

Come and explore the traditional techniques found in Scottish frame baskets (more commonly known as arm creels) once used by fishing communities along a small stretch of the northeast coastline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These baskets were carried by fisher wives to display fish at markets and on their selling rounds.

Learn how to weave your own version of this traditional creel using a distinctive construction method that produces a strong and sturdy basket. During the day, Rachel will be happy to share stories and insights gathered through her research into this historic technique, for anyone interested in hearing more about the heritage behind the basket.

All materials and tools are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own fine 4ft willows if you’d like to incorporate them into your basket.

Max. 8 participants
£220 per person (Frames and handles set and dried in advance)
