We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be working in partnership with the Woodland Trust at their Glen Finglas property, part of The Great Trossachs Forest. The Forest covers an area equal in size to Glasgow, stretching from just outside Callander to the shores of Loch Lomond, with Glen Finglas in the east, the RSPB’s Inversnaid nature reserve in the west and Loch Katrine (managed by the Forestry Commission) in the middle. In partnership with the Woodland Trust, we’ll be bringing areas of hazel into a coppice rotation and using the materials in traditional coppice crafts.
Our first event will be on Friday 3rd April at the Glen Finglas Visitor Gateway from 10am to 4pm. We’ll be exploring the coppice, discussing the reasons for this type of woodland management and its benefits for wildlife. We’ll learn about how to coppice and the different uses for coppice sticks. And we’ll be putting the coppice sticks to work, making a garden obelisk and a split hazel woven panel, which participants can take home. We’ll also have charcoal and other coppice products available to buy on the day.

This is the first event of what promises to be an exciting partnership. Each winter, Green Aspirations will lead volunteer training and coppice cutting events. This will bring hazel into coppice rotation, helping to enhance woodland habitats. The hazel to be coppiced forms distinct areas along tracks, and coppicing will create different edge habitats as the growth returns. There's a great tradition of coppicing in Scotland and we're hoping that our work will inspire landowners to restore or create coppice locally. Through demonstrating and teaching coppice crafts we aim to give gardeners and BBQ-ers the choice of locally produced sustainable products.
Items we can produce from coppice we cut:
Bean poles – for supporting runner beans, 8 feet
Weavers – thinner rods for woven work and hedge laying binders
Pea sticks – for supporting peas, 4 feet
Plant stakes – supporting plants and trees in the garden. Range of lengths 3 to 7 feet
Charcoal – BBQ and artists charcoal
Woven panels – round or split hazel, made to order in range of sizes
Bags of random sticks – for crafting

Further events will be held later this year. See you in the woods when the leaves fall!
