About the Event
Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Highlanders by replicating a 2000 year old Highlands cup of your own. With expert tuition from Wooden Tom, you will be guided to safely use hand tools such as a knife and axe to create your own Highlands kuksa cup or whisky quaich to take home. During the course, you'll learn:
- How to use an axe to accurately cleave wood
- The correct use of the carving axe to rough out the shape of your item
- Safe use and cutting techniques with the carving knife and gouge
There is no need for prior experience as you will be guided step-by-step in all the green wood skills and tool techniques needed on the day. For those with green woodworking experience, this will make add a great new craft to your repertoire. See https://youtu.be/Ucx9UrMKjLU
Wooden Tom has been wood carving since he was a lad in the North East of England and teaching in the Cairngorm mountains for 5 years. He loves nothing better than using what resources are common to that area in attempt to create locally unique items. For him, this means Birch and Scots Pine are his tipple and his preferred tools are the axe, knife and gouge. Find out more here: https://woodentom.com/
You'll arrive in the woods by 10am, and be directed to our hand-built, greenwood shelter. From there, one of our experienced trainers will lead you through the workshop. All wood and tools are provided, as well as tea, coffee and biscuits.
